Summer chaos

There is no denying it. It is most definitely autumn. I finally brought the last the garden had to offer into the house yesterday. Two zucchini, one tomato the frosts had somehow missed, two tiny but sweet ears of corn and a smattering of rebel sugar snap peas. The winter squash are still out but the frost is still light enough to leave them.

This was my first vegetable garden and it was spectacular! What a great introduction to gardening for sustenance. I can’t wait to do it all again next year – but BIGGER and better 🙂 I’m definitely hooked.

My son went back to school September 5th. Grade 3. Time really does go by much too fast. I always feel like I don’t do enough with him during our short summers.

My partner was home with us for two months which was great. Although I must say it definitely added to the chaos. You never know what is going to happen until it happens when he is around. Sudden trips to one end of our province or another happened with no more than 5 minutes notice it seemed. Hard for an eight year old who needs routine and even harder on a 42 year old who needs routine and lots of time to shift gears. Not much painting happened between the garden, swimming and unannounced road trips. But it was so nice to have him home every single night. That’s one thing with him working out west, it’s lonely once the boy and the animals are all tucked in for the night.

We lost a few chickens over the summer. Three hens died of peritonitis which we traced back to our lovely Mr. Fawkes. The vet figured it was his chronic vent gleet that was infecting the girls cloacas.

After months of daily baths he was the sweetest and calmest rooster which made it even sadder that he had to be culled. We were lucky enough to have the handiest handy man ever working on our addition. Jack killed him for us and buried him by the river. The girls have been directionless ever since Big Daddy died last year. They were just starting to accept Mr. Fawkes. Since his untimely demise, my favourite hen, Breeze, has stepped up to the plate and assumed cock of the walk position. She has become quite ornery with me and pecks my legs viciously now instead of gently when she wants to be cuddled. She still stretches to be picked up but immediately attacks when she is set back down. She’s even growing spurs! I haven’t seen her mount anyone yet and I can’t imagine how the two young roosters will make out with her once they come of age. She is one ferocious chicken!

We had major renovations completed this summer which also added to the chaos. Our front deck is finally done. Hooray! And we knocked a wall out between the original house and the addition. Only took three years to finally make it happen. It was two months of daily renovations and I think I handled it very well. Certainly better than I would have two years ago. We still have painting to do and more renovations once Mom sells her house and makes the move from the big city to join us. But for this year I think we are done.

So with Glenn back to work and Trey back in school, I have almost no excuses to avoid painting. Here are some rough photos of what I’ve been up to…

  1. I’m not sure how I missed your second post, but I’m glad I’ve checked back up on you. Oh Trey is just a cutie for sure. I love his head of curls. I don’t know how my son managed to not get my curls but he does have or will have I should say “great guy hair”. Not too curly but not perfectly straight either.

I just loved reading about your chickens and things going on in your life. I can relate to a lot of what is going on with you in my life. I hope you haven’t given up on blogging. However, I have to encourage you to spend more time on your blog than Facebook from what I’ve been reading lately about Facebook and their plan to make us pay for our followers to see our posts (look up Derek Halpern). Why spin your wheels there? At least you have control over everything here on your blog. Not that you shouldn’t have a presence there, I try to also. But I’m going to try to spend more of that energy on directing traffic to my site and sign up for my newsletter than I have in the past. Enough of that…

I love your paintings, they are just beautiful… I hope this finds you well.

    • Thanks for the kind words, Jaime. I really enjoy all of your posts and often want to comment but don’t get to the computer in a timely fashion. I use my smartphone to do my Internet reading but it isn’t conducive to writing.

I really struggle with turning my computer on. I actually haven’t done anything on fb yet. I’m nervous about putting things on the Internet. I was really active on fb for a longtime but found in the end it was really having a negative impact on my self esteem and mental health. People are often insensitive, sometimes unwittingly, and sadly, sometimes intentionally. I was going through a very difficult time when I left fb. My dad was undeniably dying, my son was having some problems, I had just graduated from a very intense two year program, moved and was unsure of what to do next. I was in flux and feeling raw and fragile. And in the last week I was on fb I had 4 people make remarks that just stung a bit too much. I didn’t need confrontation, I didn’t need flippant remarks, I needed fb to be a light hearted distraction. To be fair, I’m sure the people who said things didn’t know I was in a bad place but I needed to withdraw to protect myself.

It’s been three years now and a lot has happened. I fell down. I *really* fell down hard. But, with a lot of gentle support from Glenn, my sister in law, my mom and my brother, I got back up. I got the help I needed and I am finding my way. So I’m just feeling really conflicted about putting myself out there again. I want to. But I’m scared. I know there is a wonderful community of creative people online that are kind and supportive of one another, and I want to step outside of the cocoon of safety I’ve crafted for myself, but it’s scary.

But I haven’t given up yet. I’m just off to a weak start :p the race is long and I’ll find my stride 🙂

In light, happy news, I’m getting officially married in less than 8 hours! 😀

We are just having a really simple civil ceremony with Glenn’s children as witnesses since neither one of us is comfortable with being the centre of attention and it being the second time around for both of us. But I’m excited! I really want to be officially married, having a “boyfriend” at 42 was just awkward. And I couldn’t ask for a better partner 🙂

  2. Husb and I are just thinking of doing the first dig of the year on our allotment after a very hard winter. It’s hard work but it’s such a buzz to pick your own produce.

    • It is, Rosie, isn’t it? I’m so looking forward to spring and cleaning up the raised beds and making a few more this year. Winter is soooo long and dreary here in Nova Scotia. I am ready for some milder temperatures. I feel a bit whimpy complaining though as we are just in the -10*C range these days and Northern Alberta, where my husband is, was -43*C yesterday! So I guess I’ll just fill the wood-stove up again and not complain too much while I dream of this years seed catalogue.
